Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords is calling on Oregonians to "stand up for what's right" and vote for Gov. Kate Brown in this November's election.

Giffords spoke about gun reform at a campaign event in Tualatin on Friday.

In 2011, she suffered permanent brain damage as one of 13 people hurt in a mass shooting in Tucson.

Six people died in the shooting, which happened at one of Giffords' constituent events in a supermarket parking lot.

"Make our country a safer place, a better place. Do you have the courage to fight? Stand with me. Vote! Vote! Vote!" she said at Friday's event in Tualatin. "On Election Day, your voice matters."

Brown says she's delivered results on common-sense gun safety measures while her opponent, state Rep. Knute Buehler voted no on universal background checks.

She also wants to ban bump stocks, ban assault weapons and raise the gun purchasing age to 21, among other measures.

Buehler's communications director says Buehler has proven that he's not afraid to stand up to the special interests in his party. He also says he supports raising the legal age to purchase an assault rifle, a three-day waiting period to buy a handgun and banning bump stocks.
