Cheers and applause rang out as former astronaut and political activist Mark Kelly took the podium at UCF Monday.

The husband of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords is in town to show his support for Murphy, who is running for her second term on a platform he's passionate about.

"It's really sad to see what has happened with gun violence here in the state of Florida," Kelly said.

Kelly said he's a gun owner and supports the Second Amendment.

He said it's not about taking away all guns, but passing what he calls "common sense gun restrictions."

"I believe here in Florida, you can go down to a gun show and buy a gun without getting a background check. Why do we let criminals do that?" Kelly said.

The issue is personal to Kelly, whose wife survived an assasination attempt by a gunman back in 2011.

Also discussed at the rally was the push for legislation in the wake of the shooting at Pulse Nightclub in 2016, and the Parkland Massacre earlier this year.

Kelly was there to support Democrats, including Anderw Gillum, but his sentiment was echoed in Sunday night's gubernatorial debate by Republican candidate, Ron DeSantis.

"So, I think that the school security is something I'm working on with Andy Pollack, whose daughter Meadow tragically lost her life there. We are going to fix it in terms of school security," DeSantis said Sunday.

Above all else, Kelly said his message is clear -- get out and vote.
